Brad Fisher wins GMTB XC
Well done to Brad Fisher whose third lap was his fastest to take out the race from Gary Jackson and Ashley Higman. Enormous thanks to Bryce & Sharon Dilly for maintaining the track in brilliant condition and to Bryce & Jacinta Nelson for marshalling on the day. Thanks also to Gary Jackson from Riviera Cycles in Bairnsdale for very generously donating prizes for the day.
Perennial bike riding superstar Gary obviously forgot his EPO as he blew up on the third lap suffering from cramp. Riviera Cycles general bike guru Matt unfortunately broke his chain but had to wait for somebody who knew how to fix it. James came all the way from Orbost, rode like a trojan, then drove all the way back to Orbost. Baden couldn’t continue his Tour de Riviera road race winning form from the day before, maybe he should have worn his maillot jeune. Baden’s father Phil struggled taking the big rig through the bush; his jousting stick for handlebars didn’t negotiate the trees very well. Ashley, who is built more like a Spanish hill-climbing whippet than a mountain bike rider flew around, surprising his more fancied opponents with three very consistent laps. Steve warned that he was prone to getting lost so he promptly did, but only added a leisurely 10km to his trip; maybe if he wasn’t leading at the time he would have had somebody to follow. Glen battled hard all day, had a few mechanical issues and still finished a very respectable fifth. Sharon made the most of home course knowledge and gave brother in law Andy a bit of a touch up on the last lap. Race director Stuart gave up and went looking for the esky. Self appointed mountain bike “king” Simon did well to finish as he must have had 4 punctures and finished marginally in front of coach & mentor Liz. Simon then proceeded to eat all of the sausages.
