Charcoal Never Lies!

Roughly 50 punters showed up for the “Eaglehawk Scramble” latin for “a downhill ride with mostly climbing”. A couple of ‘private’ pre race briefings were held … one for Ash Webster ……don’t worry Ash , in your definition of ‘hills” there are none here, it’s flat….after his banquet of bulls**t served up when he said of Foster “only one 200m climb”.

And another to Black Caviar ( Brad Fisher ) “do you understand the reason we have guide tape, try not to make up your own route.”, after his pioneering trail blazing effort at the Blores Twilight race last year…..

Fisher Wins S & J Cycles Eaglehawk Scramble

The 55 strong field for the inaugural running of the S&J Cycles Eaglehawk Scramble were presented with perfect conditions on race day with mild weather and a dry track. The riders were shuttled to the top of the Eaglehawk Road and then released out on to the physically challenging top half of the course.

In the early stages, junior rider, Tom Deller set about establishing a gap ahead of riders of the calibre of Brad Fisher and Adam Wiggins. Unfortunately for Tom, after establishing a buffer over his rivals, mechanical misfortune intervened in the form of a broken chain, costing him many places and lots of time. The nature of back country point to point races means the riders need a high level of self sufficiency and in a valiant display of determination, Tom repaired his bike and battled on to finish ninth overall.

Gippsland MTB Girls ‘Dirty’ Weekend’

I signed up to attend the Gippsland MTB Girls ‘Dirty’ Weekend, and dirty is exactly what I got! The rain came thumping down the night before and just as we were heading out the door it pelted down again, leaving some very muddy trails!! Bex and I turned up to the wrong accommodation to start with, but shortly found the Munjara Camp and were made to feel right at home as we sat down in front of the fire and waited for a few of the other ladies to join us. Great night sleep in the mud brick cabins and by 10am on Saturday 16 keen girls were ready to hit the trails!

Mt Baw Baw 4 Hour Twilight Enduro Report: 27-Jan-2013

Mt Baw Baw was the location for the opening round of the Gippsland MTB cross country / endurance series.  Just the words ‘Mt Baw Baw’ put a shiver down your spine as it is set in rugged high alpine country and the only flat in the area is the bar where you rest your drink.

Mention Mt Baw Baw in mountain bike circles and downhill is the discipline we all think of. However, the crew at Mt Baw Baw are looking to the future with plans to create a new 9km flow track as well as introducing more mountain bike tracks around the resort.  Mt Baw Baw is the place to be for mountain biking over the summer for many years to come. Whether it’s downhill, cross country or just getting out for a bit of an adventure, the future is looking good.

Road Riding Champ Wins Baw Baw 4 Hour Twilight Mountain Bike Enduro

It was a fast lapping bunch of endurance mountain bikers who gathered atop Victoria’s Mount Baw Baw on Australia Day weekend for the inaugural Baw Baw 4-Hour Twilight Enduro event, which also doubled as the opening round of the Gippsland Mountain Bike Club’s Championship Series.

Riders swarmed the hill to tackle an 8km circuit through the snowgum wilderness, with at least three all-new singletrack sections adding to the thrill. Tracing what had been ‘old timer’ walking tracks revived from wild overgrowth, the trails had been only marginally bedded-in with riders competing in the previous day’s Seasons of Pain off road duathlon getting first crack at the freshly groomed dirt.

Over 200 riders who filed in from all over the state were greeted with somewhat cloudy skies making for great racing conditions.  Blores Hill’s fast, flowy single-track was in perfect conditions impressing all and sundry, some of whom were coping with tracks in their own areas which were waterlogged and muddy or closed altogether.

Blores Hill Caravan Park’s enthusiastic managers again allowed Gippsland MTB to use their facility as a base for the event, supplying accommodation, toilets, showers and a large staging area for riders and their support crews.
