Gippsland riders excel at state championships

Gippsland MTB has had a successful group of riders compete at the Victorian State Downhill Mountain Bike Championships at Mt Buller last weekend, featuring 234 downhill competitors on an energy sapping course in near freezing conditions. Gippsland MTB riders proved their skills during practice on the downhill course in horrendous weather conditions that some riders found tough to handle. When snow started to fall on the competitors at racing time, the riders knew that results could never be certain as anything could happen in that one important race run down the mountain. One slip off the pedals or slight miscalculation over a jump would add precious seconds to the racers time and surely mean a poor final result. All of the riders that competed at Mt Buller from Gippsland faired extremely well in the final placings and are commended for representing their club at state level.  Under 19’s Kona sponsored rider Ben Barrett blitzed the field to win the state title, while Michael Bourne also sponsored by Kona, came home in fourth place. The Elite Women’s class saw Mallard Cycles sponsored rider Leonie Picton secure first place and the state title in commanding fashion. The Veteran Men’s class was hotly contested with Mallard Cycles rider Nick King taking third place, while the Veteran Women’s class was taken out by one of our newest club members Margarete Jadamec.
