A Leisurely Arvo Ride At Maryvale: 24-Nov-2019

You know when you’re at a relaxed MTB race – a half hour start time delay is announced, we’re all puzzled – snakes?, fire?, permit?…No…a couple of Melbourne punters have gone to Erica for the race – they’ve rung in an said “there’s no one up here”. Ummm, that was a month ago boys …….”Oh Shit , were on our way”. Any wonder, driving a Volvo station wagon!

We all got underway at 10.30. About 50 punters and one pro…. Brenton Jones. Back from Europe for their winter. For those who don’t remember, he raced with us 12 years ago on his way up – ever patient mum getting him to races. Done good for lad from Warragul. He won easily, pounding away at record laps. The following Wednesday I was sent his Strava daily ride – training – 200 kms – 2145 m climbing and av speed 31.0 km/h. Geesus. No wonder he disappeared in the dust.

King Karl Cedes Crown: Pete’s Track Sprint 2013

In an extraordinary days racing on a fine day with the popular Pete’s Track at the riders mercy due to the perfect riding conditions and fast track, Karl Peel, winner of this event over the previous two years was upstaged by Dan Macmunn. It was a phenomenal performance by Dan, not only taking the win but smashing the nine minute barrier and in the process recording an astonishing time of 8minutes and 49seconds and winning by 33seconds.

The Gippsland mountain bike club’s Pete’s Track sprint had over 60 registered riders for an event that continues to go from strength to strength. Riders took advantage of the complimentary bus and trailer shuttle forgoing the need to ride back up the hill with two hours of practice runs over the 5 km course before the officially timed runs.
